Harris leads Houston over Texas State 94-71

HOUSTON (AP) - Joseph Young scored 25 points and TaShawn Thomas added 16 points and 16 rebounds as Houston topped Texas State 94-71 on Friday night.

Alandise Harris had 17 points and Jonathon Simmons 15 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (8-5), who won their fourth straight game and avenged an 81-78 defeat at Texas State on Dec. 6.

Matt Staff scored 16 points and Reid Koenen 12 for the Bobcats (7-6).

Houston shot 53.8% (35 of 65) from the floor and made 11 of its 18 attempts from 3-point range. The Cougars enjoyed a 52-25 rebounding advantage.

Young had seven points and Harris six during a 19-5 run over a 5:15 second-half stretch that gave Houston permanent control. A dunk by Thomas ended the surge and gave the Cougars a 70-50 lead with 10:04 remaining.

Steve Jobs, Jobs, Jobs ? genius, visionary ... outsourcer

Photo Matt Yohe via Wikipedia

Steve Jobs

?It?s all about Jobs. Steve Jobs. Although he was brilliant, creative and a successful CEO, he had one flaw: He outsourced Apple.?

So writes Joel D. Joseph, chairman of the Made in the USA Foundation, a Los Angeles-based group that promotes U.S. products here and abroad. Here?s the rest of Joseph?s provocative essay about Jobs, the brilliant technology pioneer who died in October, and Apple Inc.?

?Mr. Jobs could have created a hundred thousand jobs in the United States, but instead he created them in China and Korea. Apple can still move many of those jobs back to the United States.

Outsourcing

Foxconn is one of the primary subcontractors for Apple. It is the world?s largest maker of electronic products, including the iPhone, iPod and iPad. Foxconn employs from 300,000 to 450,000 workers in Shenzhen, China at the Longhua Science & Technology Park, a cramped, walled campus sometimes known as ?Foxconn City? or ?iPod City.? Covering more than one square mile, its enclave includes 15 factories, worker dormitories and a shopping area complete with a grocery store, bank, restaurants, bookstore, and a hospital. Workers never have to leave the campus, and rarely do.

Apple?s iPods are made by mainly female workers who earn as little as $40 per month, according to a report in Britain?s Daily Mail. The report claims Foxconn?s workers live in dormitories that house 100 people, and that visitors from the outside world are not permitted. Workers toil for 15 hours a day to make the iPod music player, the report claims. They earn $40 per month. The report revealed that the iPod Nano is made in a five-story factory that is secured by police officers.

Venezuela's Chavez: did U.S. give Latin American leaders cancer? (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez speculated on Wednesday that the United States might have developed a way to give Latin American leaders cancer, after Argentina's Cristina Fernandez joined the list of presidents diagnosed with the disease.

It was a typically controversial statement by Venezuela's socialist leader, who underwent surgery in June to remove a tumour from his pelvis. But he stressed that he was not making any accusations, just thinking aloud.

"It would not be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it until now ... I don't know. I'm just reflecting," he said in a televised speech to troops at a military base.

"But this is very, very, very strange ... it's a bit difficult to explain this, to reason it, including using the law of probabilities."

Chavez, Fernandez, Paraguay's Fernando Lugo, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff and former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have all been diagnosed recently with cancer. All of them are leftists.

Doctors say Fernandez has a very good chance of recovery and will not need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Her diagnosis was made public on Tuesday.

Chavez said other regional leaders should beware, including his close ally, Bolivian President Evo Morales.

"We'll have to take good care of Evo. Take care Evo!" he said.

The 57-year-old is Latin America's loudest critic of U.S. foreign policy along with Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro, and he frequently lashes out at what he calls the "Yankee Empire".

CASTRO'S WARNING

"Fidel always told me, 'Chavez take care. These people have developed technology. You are very careless. Take care what you eat, what they give you to eat ... a little needle and they inject you with I don't know what,'" he said.

In his comments on Wednesday, Chavez also slammed Washington and its European allies for criticizing Russia's recent parliamentary elections - and said they were planning the same thing for Venezuela's presidential election in October, when he will seek re-election.

"They are crying fraud and saying the elections need to be re-run ... They're trying to destabilize no less than Russia, a nuclear power. That's the madness of the Empire," Chavez said.

"I say this because here in Venezuela, the Imperial Yankee, the local bourgeoisie, and a good part of what they call the opposition parties here, are preparing a similar plan," he said.

"I call on the armed forces to be alert, on the Venezuelan people to be alert. Because we are not going to let the Imperial Yankee destabilize Venezuela again like they did in the past."

Details about Chavez's health remain a closely guarded secret, although he now appears to be recovering and is making longer and longer televised appearances.

Earlier this month he made his first official foreign trip after his surgery, to a regional summit in Uruguay.

Since his return he has often appeared sporting something of a younger, new look: a dark sports coat over an open-necked maroon shirt, and is hair is growing back after chemotherapy.

It is far cry from the green fatigues and red beret that he became famous for wearing for much of his 13 years in power.

U.S., Israel Discuss Triggers for

When Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opined earlier this month that an Israeli attack on Iran?s nuclear facilities could ?consume the Middle East in a confrontation and a conflict that we would regret,? the Israelis went ballistic behind the scenes. Michael Oren, Israel?s ambassador to Washington, lodged a formal diplomatic protest known as a demarche. And the White House was thrust into action, reassuring the Israelis that the administration had its own ?red lines? that would trigger military action against Iran, and that there is no need for Jerusalem to act unilaterally.

The Israelis must have felt the knife touch their back.
Obama has little troubel throwing small democracies under the bus.
Now, with their existance at stake, Obama wants to reassure his Jewish base that he is Israel's best friend.
Why they would believe any of this, is beyond me.

Nursing moms upset with breastfeeding preferences at Target stores staged a "nurse-in" Wednesday at locations in Chicago and across the country. Local moms say the demonstration is meant to raise awareness about controversies over nursing in public. This latest outcry, they say, stems from a recent incident in Texas. Michelle Hickman, a Houston mother of four, apparently was nursing in a remote area of a Target store when staffers told her to move into a fitting room. There were so many employees confronting her, she said, that it was time to speak up.

Caracas, Venezuela -- A day after officials announced the cancer diagnosis of Argentina's president, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wondered Wednesday if the United States could be infecting the region's leaders with the illness. Five current or former Latin American presidents have battled cancer in the past few years, including Chavez himself, who claims to have beaten an unspecified cancer. Chavez prefaced his remarks at a military event in Caracas by saying, "I don't want to make any reckless accusations," but the Venezuelan president said he was concerned by something he finds "very, very, very strange."

TEHRAN/DUBAI - The U.S. Fifth Fleet said on Wednesday it would not allow any disruption of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran threatened to stop ships moving through the world's most important oil route. It was the second such warning in two days. That means anyone who wants to vote must sign a form at the polling place pledging to support the eventual Republican nominee for president. Anyone who refuses to sign the pledge will be barred from voting. During a brief meeting at the state Capitol, the board also held a drawing that determined Texas Rep.
