Exit interviews - Business Management Daily

exit interviewDetermining why employees leave is one key to taming turnover.

Employers often use exit interviews to identify the answer. But departing employees are often uncomfortable opening up to management. As a result, information may be inaccurate. ?

Here?s an alternative: Conduct exit interviews using online surveys. Consider the following factors:

Pros

Anonymity and confidentiality. It?s easier for some to believe privacy promises if they aren?t answering live questions or filling out a survey at work.

Increased participation rates. Online services claim their participation rates are higher than the average 30% to 35% for traditional exit interviews.

Consistency. Many employers frequently change their questions and don?t analyze the results objectively. Online surveys allow you to standardize and analyze the same questions to all ex-staff.

Time savings. Managers and HR no longer have to schedule, conduct and collate the results of exit interviews. ?

Cons

Scheduling. It can be more difficult to contact employees and obtain an online exit interview after they leave the company.

Confidentiality. Some departing em??ployees may not trust the privacy of online information and decline to participate or give less-than-honest answers.

Bangladeshi peacekeeper killed in Sudan's Darfur

Gunmen on Sunday shot and killed a Bangladeshi policeman serving with the African Union-UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region, the mission said, adding to a recent surge of violence.

Another UNAMID policeman was wounded in the attack on their compound in the South Darfur capital Nyala, a UNAMID statement said.

The Bangladeshi, whose name was not released, "lost his life at approximately 3:15 am (0015 GMT), when a gang surrounded and fired at the staff in the mission's community policing centre inside the Otash camp for internally displaced persons," UNAMID said.

"The armed men fled after the police unit returned fire."

There was no detail on the identity of the attackers or their motive.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in an April report to the UN Security Council, said criminality "has emerged as the most significant threat to civilians and humanitarian workers", including in camps for displaced people.

To address the new security environment, the Security Council on July 31 trimmed the size of the UNAMID mission, which will still have about 21,000 soldiers and police.

UNAMID says 38 of its peacekeepers have been killed since the initial deployment more than four years ago.

In other recent unrest, Sudanese security forces in Nyala shot dead eight people during a protest sparked by high prices on July 31.

Last Thursday, UNAMID said it had received reports from fleeing villagers of air strikes west of Shangil Tobay, south of the North Darfur state capital El Fasher. Rebels are active in the area, the army said.

On Friday the UN reported that 25,000 people have been displaced around the North Darfur town of Kutum after unrest that began with the killing of a government official.

Rebels drawn from black African tribes rose against the Arab-dominated Khartoum government in 2003 in a conflict the UN estimates killed at least 300,000 people. The government said 10,000 died.

Clashes between rebels and government troops, banditry and inter-ethnic fighting continue in the region but violence is much less than at its peak nearly a decade ago.

The UN says about 1.7 million people are still living in camps in Darfur.

Tips to get the best deal flights at the best times | Travel and Leisure

In today?s economy, everybody is looking for a bargain. Flights are one area that fluctuates a lot, but there are big savings to be had. Here are some tips for getting the best deal on your flight.

Timing

Research has found that the cheapest day to find a flight is Tuesday in the afternoon. This is when the most sale seats are available. Also, while this can vary due to last minute and early bird specials, in general, the best time to purchase your tickets is three months before departure for domestic flights, and five months for international. Prices go up drastically about 2 weeks before lift off.

Fare Watchers

Many websites such as Bing Travel and Airfarewatchdog.com will allow you to set a fare alert which will email you when they find the lowest price on airfare. This process can take awhile, so it probably isn?t for last minute shoppers, but if you plan in advance you can find some good deals. Some sites also have a price match guarantee, which will refund the difference if your fare goes down.

Schedule Flexibility

If possible, consider being flexible with your travel dates. Some websites automatically check multiple dates for you, others you will just have to experiment. Traveling on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday, or choosing flights with one or more stops, is usually cheaper, so if you can adjust your trip accordingly you might save some money.

Packaged Deals

Usually hotel/airfare combinations are cheaper than if you were to buy individually. Expedia.com and Travelocity.com can help you find packaged deals, but many hotels will set one up for you as well. Not every flight and hotel qualifies, but you can potentially save $500 or more.

Credit Cards

If you are a frequent flyer, you might consider an airline affiliated credit card. These cards might not be worth it for the occasional travel, as they typically come with membership fees. However, miles can add up quickly and they often include extra benefits such as no baggage fees or priority boarding.

Hidden Charges

Taxes and fees are required to be advertised in your fare, but there are extra expenses you might not consider. Checked baggage and seat selection are two that people often don?t think about. Outside of airline credit cards and promotions, there isn?t a lot you can do to get rid of these fees, so include them in your budget.

Republicans not seeking to block HHS contraceptive mandate ...

CWN - July 30, 2012

Although Republican political leaders have denounced President Obama for imposing a contraceptive mandate as part of his health-care reform, the Republican leadership has not taken action to overturn the regulation, Politico notes.

House Speaker John Boehner said that the contraceptive mandate ?must not stand and will not stand.? But no vote to block the mandate has been scheduled in the House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a majority.
